The 8-Second Skirt-from-a-Shirt

1 Posted by - January 6, 2012 - DIY & Crafts, Women's Apparel

Readers, I would like you to know that I am suffering a personal crisis right now (dude, one broken nail I can handle, but three?), but I realize that my duty is to you. Therefore, I did this test in the bathroom at work. Um, on my lunch break, in case my bosses are reading. Hear that, bosses? I spend my lunch breaks testing weird Pinterest pins in the bathroom. Now you know.

There is somewhat of a glut of people making skirts out of shirts on Pinterest. Usually men’s shirts. This leaves me befuddled for several reasons: (1) Why would you think that a neck hole would work for your waist? (2) So great, now you have a skirt, but what is the poor guy you stole the shirt from doing? I mean, chest hair ain’t bad, but it’s not exactly business casual.

Anyway, I found a pin that is supposedly a way to make your shirt (and not your guy friend’s shirt, thank you baby Jesus, he can still go to work today) into a cute little skirt with a bow, as such:

I had my worries about this from the start. (1) My ass is much bigger than hers. (2) It’s a fucking shirt. Not a skirt.

But, I love you, and I live to serve. So I took myself to the giant handicapped bathroom stall and gave it a go.

Forgive me for the quality of this photo. As mentioned, I was in a bathroom stall. At work.

I gamely took off the shirt and then put it on and shoved it down to my waist. This is when I realized with a drop of my guts that I had neglected to lock the stall door. I probably realized it because a woman opened the door, went, “Oops!” and then shut it real quick, but not before the look of horror registered on her face. I can’t imagine why. I was standing there in my bra, wrestling my shirt down to my waist. Doesn’t everyone do that in bathroom stalls at work?

The results were less than inspiring. I ended up with a weird-shaped thing that was too tight (even with all the buttons undone) and the arms wouldn’t reach far enough around my fat butt to tie in the tiniest of bows. Pinterest, today you have succeeded not only in affirming that I lack even the most basic DIY skills, but that I am also lardier than your average cute little pinner. Thank you.

My recommendation? Unless your waist is approximately 17″, skip this one.

I think she intended people to use a knit shirt like she did; button down shirts do not have the stretch required. Don’t do it on a shirt you plan to wear again!

I am literally crying because I’ve been reading your blog for the past hour and you are so hilarious!!  I love that you always pick the dumb pins, like this one, to test.

Damn! I was hoping to make this my walk-of-shame staple.

….I may or may not have tried this exact thing half an hour ago. My ass is too fat for it to look good. Luckily, I didn’t like the shirt that I totally destroyed the neck hole on anyways.

Don’t worry – I’m tiny and this didn’t work for me either.

I swear the example they show is an actual SKIRT that was SEWN that way to look adorable. Freakin liars.

    I lovelovelove this blog, ps.

Have you see this video? It will likely make you hate the idea even more. ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2JwdZC31nQU

and seriously, the shirt in this video is NOT a shirt this girl has worn, other than maybe post coital. It looks like it belongs to her ex who was maybe in the NFL or MMA.

i’m pretty sure there’s a lot of pinterest trolls out there who put up really cute stuff but their blog (or description) neglects to say how it was really done…  kinda like the “make a glow bottle with mountain dew” pin going around…  there should be a snoops for crafts and recipes!

I think that this idea came from a gal who had to do the walk of shame one too many times, stole the poor guys shirt because she slept in, had to go on her other date.  I love the ‘idea’ of it, but seriously, I am not a stick either. and I could never fit into my hubbys shirt! top or bottom! thanks for the humor

I’m way late to the game, but this dress/skirt idea makes me think of that scene from the Little Mermaid where she first gets on land and realizes that she’s butt nekkid and makes a dress out of a sail. So basically we’ve got a lot of princess out there in pinterest land.  See the link for the scene I’m talking about: http://littlemeeshmuffet.blogspot.com/2011/06/pop-culture-polyvore-ariel-little.html

I can’t read this without my inhaler near me! My geeky asthma kicks in. Seriously, could you live with yourself if one of your readers literally died from laughing?

  • Rebeccawater

Haha! I think the only way someone would want to try this is they somehow wrecked their pants unexpectedly and happened to be wearing two shirts… So not practical!

  • EffingHilarious

No Joke! The people who post some of this crap on Pinterest really have no clue….lol

  • Amanda

You are amazing! I’m literally crying laughing so hard! Thanks (:

Actually this pin works. It works really well on condition that: a) You use a V-necked shirt. V-necks mean you don’t have to have a skinny waist and don’t end up stretching a perfectly decent shirt. I’m a size 16. And I’ve used every one of my V-neck jerseys as a skirt. Some as high-waisted skirts b) one must be patient with the bow. A simple knot isn’t a bow. The thicker the fabric the better the bow looks. c) this, like most fashion tips and tricks, only works  if you actually WANT it to work. Trying it over your jeans, in a bathroom stall, during your lunch break, isn’t going to work.

I love seeing lame hoaxy pins get debunked, but this really does work for anyone out there willing to give it a proper shot. I’m only defending it, because, as a bigger girl, finding cute clothes is hard, and a pin like this made my existing closet a lot more versatile.

Weirdly enough, I pictured this use of the shirt in a mad max apocalyptic future.

Some tiny asian chick grabbed a shirt off the rack of an old world store and tries to figure out how it works. I could see this happening in The Walking dead, oddly enough.
