Ok, guys. I realize navel-gazing and introspection are not the usual fare on this blog. If you came only to see me screw up a pin, come back tomorrow. I’ll do it again then. But for today, I wanted to chat with you about personality types.
I’ve always been fascinated by personality typing. Part of that, probably, is that I’m a writer. My first love is fiction writing, and fiction writers are always looking for great ways to encapsulate personality so that we can write about it better. Some writers use horoscopes. Some use Myers-Briggs. I like enneagrams.
But even before I identified as a writer, I always flipped to the quizzes in glossy magazines first. You know the ones… What kind of summer lovin’ do you like best? and Who’s your ideal college guy? with silly answers that supposedly match with your personality, based on your responses.
Why do I do that stuff? Well, part of the answer is in my Myers-Briggs profile. I’m an INFJ, and that makes me “highly complex, often puzzling even to [myself].” (from Wikipedia) So in order to figure myself out, I take all these quizzes about what breed of dog I would be (Spaniel) or what Hogwarts house I’d be in (Hufflepuff).
Personality typing can also help in relationships. For example, I know my husband is an ENTJ, so I probably shouldn’t ask him how something makes him feel. It’s just not his strong suit to answer that sort of thing. And in professional relationships, I know my DiSC profile is Perfectionist (yes, it’s a cruel joke that I am so terrible at Pinterest pins), so I can work harder on trying to be charming (since that is usually my lowest priority… but you guys probably already figured that one out) and try to dial back my detail-focus and analysis a little bit, at least right at first so I don’t scare people away.
In case you want to test this out for yourself, there’s a book (Archetypes: Who Are You?) currently available and a related website, ArchetypeMe.com where you can take a quiz to figure out your archetype. Once you do that, you get a sort-of Pinterest-style dashboard filled with stuff targeted for your archetype. It’s pretty nifty.
I’ll tell you what my archetype is in a follow-up post soon…
And now for the giveaway! One lucky reader will win a $50 Visa gift card and a copy of the Archetypes: Who Are You? book, signed by the author. Just answer this question in the comments section below: Why do you think it’s important to really know who you are?
