A Touching Tale of Poo (and a chance to win some Rockin’ Green soap!)

0 Posted by - September 2, 2012 - Kids, Reviews, Sweepstakes

Guys, I am pleased to have my first guest poster today AND our first ever sweepstake! I’m super excited to bring you this post from my talented, smart, and beautiful identical twin sister. Read to the end for your chance at some free stuff! Here’s Joanna:

Just to prove that we are in fact related to The Pintester…

(making faces at Christmas)

This is me with my beautiful baby girl. She is 20 months old now and super smart, with a great sense of humor, just like Auntie.

And like Auntie, I love Pinterest but tend to meet with limited success on actually carrying out pins. Most notable was probably the mug cake that ended up tasting like chewy flatulence.

Image from MyFitnessPal.com

But I do have a favorite board on Pinterest, full of ideas and products that I have actually tried over the last wonderful two years — cloth diapering. I am by no means a cloth diapering expert, but I have found what works for our family! Namely, what works for our family is saving money (and maybe like the Earth and stuff).

That being said, there is certainly a learning curve with this stuff. Here’s my first attempt at cloth diapering a tiny butt:

It got some better after a while:

And eventually almost normal-looking:

Another part of the cloth diaper learning curve was, unfortunately, learning to keep the stink down.

Hey, y’all, babies kinda smell, and they ooze a lot.  I don’t put on real clothes until right before I walk out the door because it reduces the risk of getting pooped, peed, barfed, or snotted on.  I’ve actually considered wearing a shirt with “just a little bit” of pee on it to work because “it will dry by the time I get there.”  To my coworkers: Yes, I do find that disgusting in retrospect, and no, I didn’t actually do it.

Some cloth diapering fails from our house (graphic poopiness below):

  1. I bought this hilariously ironic skull-and-crossbones laundry bag marketed to college students.  Then, I expected it to work well at containing the butt funk of a baby who pooped half her body weight every day.
  2. During “transitional poo” phase, wherein the baby gut gets used to solid food, Daddy actually vomited once while depositing the poo in the toilet.  I was not impressed.  In fact, I was not nice at all.  So then, Daddy had to clean up transitional poo and transitional barf.
  3. After the vomit incident, I would come home occasionally to find poopy diapers waiting for me next to the toilet.  Sometimes I would find them only when I set out to discover why my whole house smelled like litterbox.

But overall, it’s been a positive experience, and I’d say we’ve nailed it… or at least fastened it securely enough that it won’t fall off.

Thanks to Rockin Green for sponsoring this post. At our house, we keep cloth diaper stinkies under control with Classic Rock detergent and a little Funk Rock in the prewash!

So after that touching story of poo diapers from Joanna, I know you all are ready to try the magic of Rockin Green! It’s not just for poo diapers, either. It’s for all of your clothes (especially the stinky ones). All the readers of Pintester get a 15% off coupon, courtesy of Rockin Green. Just go to the site and order some soap and use coupon code “pintester” (without the quotes).

One lucky commenter on today’s post will also win a $50 gift certificate for Rockin Green soap! The sweepstake is open from right now until Friday, September 7, 2012 at midnight Eastern time, so comment until then for your chance to win. Be sure to leave me some way to get in touch with you so that I can let you know you’re the winner and get your mailing address for the gift certificate! One entry per person, U.S. residents 18 and older only, please! No purchase is necessary. Odds of winning are based on number of entries.

Winner will be notified via the method of contact you leave in your comment by midnight on Saturday, September 8, 2012. If a response is not received within 2 business days, a new winner will be drawn.

Firstly, this post was great…obviously, the sense of humor runs in the family! Second, why is someone going to complain about a giveaway? So yeah, she’s advertising for a product, but who cares? You get the chance to win something free, and she gets the chance to make some money. Besides, if she’s pushing a product that actually works, that’s awesome, because I can’t tell you how many times my clothes have come out of the wash still funky. Anyways, keep the post coming! Love your stuff!

I giggled through the whole post!  We love our RnG!  I read the message boards about washing issues and see the crazy “cold rinse first, then add vinegar, then warm soak, then add soap, then pre-rinse, then wash, then stop the washer, wait 10 minutes, blah, blah, blah”.  We have NEVER had issues like that and we have used RnG from the start

    • jopen September 2, 2012 - 12:51 pm Reply

sweetjulz Definitely! I tried other stuff, and Rockin Green kicks poopy tail with just a simple wash.

I remember and I understand.  I thought the washing machine was supposed to magically clean all the dirt and stink from clothes.  It doesn’t.  My husband is taking meds that change the smell of his sweat.  I’ve been using bleach to get out the stench.  Not very green-minded.

i too know the joys of cloth diapering! my favorite poo story is after nursing the sweetling to sleep, carrying her all the way to her bed and laying her down before i realized she’d poo’d all over herself, my shirt, and left a trail in the hallway. GRAND TIMES! lol.thegrimtuesday at gmail

  • CrystalKYuhhyzaguirre September 2, 2012 - 7:56 pm Reply

lol. One time I took my son to the er bc he had horrible diarrhea and a fever and wouldnt drink anything. So you know how they put the thermometer in the baby’s butt? They did that and he took that opportunity to let it fly. And I do mean fly. It was projectile poo. It got all over me and I promptly handed my baby over to the nurse, ran to the sink in the triage and threw up blue vomit. So I can relate to baby poo induced vomiting.

Way back when my wife and I had babies, we HAD to use cloth ’cause there wasn’t the easy breasy disposable diapers there is now. And no Green soap either. We had a pail with a lockable lid, but no matter how many times you dumped out the poo and washed those things by hand before putting them in the pail for later laundry, opening that lid was cause for wearing a gas mask! One time when my wife was at work and I was being a good daddy at home by myself, I changed my son’s diapers. I cleaned him, powdered him, and made cooing sounds at him while doing it. He started crying. I tried to feed him, to burp him, he had on a clean diaper so I couldn’t figure it out. He cried for about an hour non-stop. I thought maybe he had another wet diaper so I went to change it. And that’s when I found I had pinned the diaper to him! Diaper pin with the little swan head was stuck right through his leg. I still feel so guilty. I told him about it on his 30th birthday. He looked me right in the eye and very seriously said, “I remember that.” I felt about 3 inches tall and thought I have to be the worst father ever. Then he laughed and said, “Really, Dad, really? Did you expect I would remember something from when I was 3 months old?” “Well,” I replied, “I do.”Great blog. Keep up the pintesting!Ken – http://[email protected]

Props for cloth diapering!  I would have liked to try that with my second baby, but ended up having twins and the thought of twin cloth diapering was just a wee bit overwhelming.  Now with 3 kids under the age of 7 I still do my fair share of laundry… and by fair share I mean DAILY.  I’ve been making my own laundry soap for the past year or so, but would love to try some earth friendly soap that I didn’t have to make by the bucket load!

  • jenn5388 September 3, 2012 - 12:51 pm Reply

I used cloth on all 3 of my kids, My first was the only one that was sucessfully in cloth 24/7 though.. I stopped with my second after 2 years and my 3rd has some, but we haven’t really used them in around 4months. lol I have a ton of prefold pictures like that from my daughter until I learned i couldn’t fold a diaper to save my life. lol the covers were too small so prefold was hanging out everywhere. lol terrible. lol Glad it sounds like you aren’t having any problems!

I LOVE Rockin’ Green. We switched over after using Charlie’s for about a year when my daughter started getting some suspicious sores in her diaper area — I did some research and found that Charlie’s has been known to react with ammonia and cause ammonia burns on some babies. I haven’t had any problems since we made the switch to RG. My email is erinking5 at gmail.

Can’t wait to try this stuff, the old hubbies sports stuff gets a little stank on it from time to time.  Keep on testing, love the site.

Oh man could we ever use this! I have seriously considered cloth diapering but I nearly vomit when our 3 year old has a poop accident. If I don’t have some gloves handy I just throw the really bad ones away. I could see cloth diapering our infant as just a form of ultra-fancy disposables for me. Infant poop is way better than kid poop but sheesh… plus we’re all allergic to fragrance so if we forget to throw some vinegar in the wash things get pretty stinky. My husband and I have funk level codes-  Funky- low, FUNK- medium, Funkasaurus- high, Funkasaurus Rex- really high, anything above that and my husband just starts singing the entrance music for Brotus Clay from WWE. I know to just pretend I can’t hear him when he walks in and starts singing “Somebody call my momma! Somebody call my momma!”

Ha! This is hilarious. We also use cloth diapers and have been since K was born. They’re great, and I wouldn’t change it. But I totally agree that scooping poo from them is totally gross. And yes, I also try and make my hubby dispose of said poo as much as possible, since I do it everyday. Email: [email protected]

My hubs refuses to do poppy dipes, he is however the one who gives the kid the food that makes his poo nonploppable, so he has been subject to going to his truck in the morning and being greeted by a diaper filled with poo on his drivers seat :). [email protected]

I have a confession.  I have one stinky armpit.  I can rock the left side with no deodorant for days.  Five minutes out of the shower and the right one smells like teenage boy.  I have ruined many shirts and have tried a number of things to help get the smell out.  This sounds like it would be right up my alley!  Between my stinky armpit and 1 and 5 year old boys, this could be a lifesaver 🙂  [email protected]

If I had been taking a sip of a lovely beverage while viewing this post there would have been a movie worthy spit take!  That picture of the first time cloth diapering literally made me laugh out loud.  I would love to try this detergent.  I have been slowly transitioning to more natural personal hygiene and cleaning products.  I currently use BioKleen but although I feel like it gets my clothes clean, it doesn’t leave much of a scent on your clothing.  That may just be something I have to get used to but I’m willing to try other brands.
