Ogre Eyes Hot Chocolate

0 Posted by - October 5, 2012 - Food & Drink, Halloween & Autumn

Look, guys. It’s not really Halloween until you start making body parts out of food. That’s just the way it is. And what better body part to start with than eyeballs?

Image from Taste of Home

The recipe has instructions for making the actual hot chocolate, too, but I’m too lazy for that shit. I used instant hot chocolate. But I made the eyeballs.

The instructions are short and sweet and sound deceptively easy. But I couldn’t even find the right candy. What the hell are Crows anyway? Is it some candy that they don’t sell in the US or something? Anyway, I couldn’t find any, so I attempted to use Hershey kisses.

It actually kind of sort of looked like it might work…

Let me tell you, though, if you’ve never thought about how hard it might be to shove a Hershey kiss in a marshmallow and then put the whole thing on a stick: it’s not all that easy. My marshmallows got a little squished and my Hershey kisses didn’t get on the stick too well.

And as far as the result, well, see for yourself.

Not exactly like the original. But scary in a different way. Like in the, “OMG you fucked up again! Scary!” way.

Also, I left to go unload the dryer (yes, I do occasionally do household chores which I do not fuck up) and when I came back, it looked like this:

And I can’t really decide if that’s a pin-fail or a didn’t-drink-it-fast-enough fail.

On the plus side, two giant marshmallows and two Hershey kisses in a cup of hot chocolate tastes pretty badass. And I drank the whole thing. Sometimes pretty doesn’t matter.

Crows are black licorice flavored “Dots” this time of year they repackage them as “bats” and they are orange flavored.
Either way, gross in hot chocolate, yours sounds better.

    Ho-ly Shit.
Add a little Jameson and it would be perfect

So I saw this pin awhle back, and I thought it was pretty cool, until I read the directions and realized there would be sticks in my hot chocolate, and that seems stupid.  So instead I shoved chocolate chips into marshmallows, pointy side in, and got pretty much the same thing, only without the sticks.  And then gravity took over and they flipped over, so it just looked like marshmallows floating in hot chocolate.  Which is still tasty.

Crows are licorice flavored gumdroppy things and it sounds revolting to put them in hot chocolate. I like your version better. Chocolate + chocolate = good.

Did you know that marshmallow vodka is an actual thing?  IT IS!  And, it happens to be delicious in hot chocolate.  In fact, I prefer a large mug of marshmallow vodka with just a splash of hot chocolate 🙂

The song “Hungry Eyes” is stuck in my head…it seems oddly appropriate for this post.

I can’t help but think this would have been better in a tom collins. They wouldn’t have melted…

I think the really scary part about this recipe are the popsicle sticks in the cup just waiting to jab into someone’s gums.
Licorice and chocolate sounds disgusting, but it’s actually really good in a really wrong sort of way.

You made the right call.  Screw licorice in chocolate.  That’s just so wrong in so many ways.  And I don’t care what it looks like, chocolate and marshmallows will always be good.  Just throw a blob in the cup.  Call it eyeballs, spleens, pancreas, whatever it takes and guzzle it.

The Peppermint Schapp’s I cut my hot chocolate with probably would have disintegrated the marshmallows anyway, so yours turned out better than mine would have.

You could’ve left out the hershey kisses and just say it’s a ghost butt. Or a snowman’s ass for the wintery holidays.

The original pin looks like olives, which makes me vomit in my mouth a little. Black licorice really doesn’t sound that much better. I really hate all the ideas that look super cute, but would probably taste awful If I’m going to spend that much time making something, it had better taste good too! Hershey’s Kisses sound delicious, I’d say you win!

I used milk duds. Same polished black pupil…added carmel-y flavor when it eventually melts. And as an added bonus, they are much easier to skewer.

well yours look kind of like boobs in chocolate so im thinking its the wrong holiday for that, but the melted one maybe if it had been like red gummy? then when it melts it would look like melted eyes? just saying

The last picture is what my drink would have looked like from the beginning. And yet I keep doing pins.

Good call on the change-up. Crows are black licorice. That would be horrid in hot chocolate.
