Giant Bubbles

I don’t have any kids, but I’m still a sucker for a super-easy, homemade recipe that results in something fun, like giant soap clouds, or BIGASS BUBBLES! Enter the Giant Bubbles pin…

What fun! And I happened to have all of the ingredients on hand. Now, you probably all remember that my corn syrup is woefully past its expiration date, but no one died last time I used it, and this recipe isn’t even meant to be eaten, so I figured I was golden.

First I added corn syrup to the water…

I was a little afraid that the two would not combine as the whole thing began with a solid-ish lump of corn syrup at the bottom of the water, but it all mixed eventually.

Then I added my dish soap.

The instructions said to stir gently without creating bubbles, and I almost managed.

I chanted my usual mantra of “good enough,” and took the whole thing outside to test it out.

For control purposes (since I’m always so scientific), I blew some grocery store bubbles first.

And then I moved on to my vat of BIGASS BUBBLES.

Uh… All I can say is, “Womp womp.” (That was a sad trombone noise, in case you didn’t get it.)

I did manage to get a big bubble here and there, but nothing like in the pinned picture. Plus I didn’t have a kid and a dog running around my ankles like maniacs, so I don’t think I had nearly as much fun.

I guess I can’t call this a total fail, but it’s a total disappointment, anyway.

You’ll notice in the upper picture, he’s using a much larger wand. He isn’t using a standard wand so I wouldn’t compare the two. I think your bubbles are just fine.

I had a feeling this would be a discussion about wand size.

My mom taught 7th grade science, and I believe that you also need to add a touch of glycerin to this to make the giant bubbles work.

Glycerin and a big ass wand. I’ve done this off the roof of an apartment building and it was awesome. Especially while drinking.

Would this big ass wand make big butt shaped bubbles? Cause ass bubbles would be ever more fun!

Yep, it’s the wand. 🙂 Bigger is better unless you are talking about cold sores or bills. Your bubs are fine! “I think we need a bigger….” wand.

The original is using like a tennis racket (forgive my crappy spelling)

Tiny bubble blowing wand = tiny bubbles. 🙂 Look at the monstrosity he’s using in the image.

glycerin is the way to go. if you’re doing the corn syrup you might get tougher bubbles? tastier bubbles? idk. but glycerin will getcha great big orbs.

Who cares about dumb bubbles? I really like your skirt!

Bigger the wand the better the fun. 😉

So…we have found more evidence to support the statement “size DOES matter”

  • Chelle Crew January 14, 2013 - 7:26 pm Reply

It’s not about the size of the wand, but how you blow it that counts.

Who are these amazing pintestes that can see his wand? I can’t even see it for cripes sake. It’s covered up by his house-sized bubble. I imagine there is something to be said for wand-size, and that being said, the bubble where we see your super cute skirt is pretty nice. Once again, I toss this out to Pinterest lying to us.

It’s red. Does that help you see it?

  • Diane January 14, 2013 - 8:44 pm Reply

I can’t claim to see his wand, but… bigger wand always means bigger bubbles. Try a bigger one! Make one out of a wire hanger if you need to, and blow away his bubbles!

I really like your posts, but, goddamn, your commenters take things to a new level of funny.

He’s using something like a Bubble Thing. I probably can’t link so if you Google “Bubble Thing,” you’ll see what I mean.

  • blackhuff January 15, 2013 - 3:20 am Reply

Pity that this didn’t go the way they advertise. At least you got some bubbles.

  • Crystal Kelly Yzaguirre January 15, 2013 - 4:02 am Reply

it looks like he was using a coat hanger or something, not a regular wand. That could explain it

  • rere January 15, 2013 - 5:39 pm Reply

Well, dumbass.. He wasn’t using a small wand like you were.

  • adnama79 January 15, 2013 - 8:22 pm Reply

Yep – I was an awesome nanny who made giant bubbles. Smaller than yours, same idea – two drinking straws and a string.

  • Gargoylz January 31, 2013 - 8:05 am Reply

OK, that A-hole is using a freakin’ tennis racket and that little girl looks scared shitless! Why is the grown ass man playing with a bubble-racket, smiling to himself while his daughter gets attacked by Cujo!?!?! Damn Pinterest, u is brutal!

  • Maurie627 February 1, 2013 - 8:11 pm Reply

If you have a metal hanger you can stretch it out and make a huge ass bubble wand. Throw some of the bubble solution on a baking sheet and voila, big ass bubbles

  • Joyce February 17, 2013 - 9:22 am Reply

The original pin looks like it is all about perspective. Those bubbles might be floating right in front of the camera and the child/man a little further back. So your bubbles did quite good!

I went to hanger management and made bubble blowing wands out of coat hangers. Any size you need to fit your bubble soap dispenser which should be flat shaped.
