Ok, so we did the apple thing yesterday. I guess now it’s time for PUMPKIN FLAVORED EVERYTHING because it’s fall, yo. And I am happy to oblige.
Let’s start with Pumpkin Spice Krispie Treats, because the name is just freaking adorable, and also yum.

Right? Right? So off we go.
My most immediate problem in gathering ingredients was that I couldn’t find any “pumpkin pie spice” in the grocery store, so I had to make my own. Based on my highly sophisticated Googling skills, I found that it’s made out of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg, so I mixed summa dat together.
Crisis averted. I moved on to gathering my other ingredients, one of which was some pumpkin puree, but only a little bit. And this much of the can was left…
So… I guess I’ll be making more stuff with pumpkin in it.
I tried to take an arty farty picture of the ingredients, but then I realized I forgot the Rice Krispies, and the kitchen light was glaring off the counter. Skillz. I haz dem.
I’ve always made Rice Krispie treats in the microwave before, because I am a classy bitch, but this recipe said to do it on the stove, and I’m a rule follower…
Except for the part where I used up some of the full-size marshmallows I had instead of all mini marshmallows.
Turns out that was a bad idea.
And I sort of got tired of waiting for the big ones to melt, so I went ahead and added the spices and pumpkin to see if that would help, because, you know, logic.
Here is where I prove that I’m an incredibly lucky motherfucker, because it actually worked:
Up until this point, I’d thought my pan was big enough, but then I added 6 cups of Rice Krispies and wondered what the actual fuck I was supposed to do with that.
It took some finagling and a bunch of stray Krispies ended up God knows where (I’ll probably find out next time I use one of my less frequently used burners and light an errant Krispie on fire), but I managed to mix the stuff more or less together.
(I know it looks like scary Mexican rice. It doesn’t smell like it, though.)
Then I smooshed it all into a pan using the time-honored wax-paper-smoosh method.
Now it’s possibly just me, but orange Rice Krispie treats throw me off a little bit. Maybe it’s that I’m still sort of thinking about Mexican rice or Doritos or something, but it’s a little bit disturbing.
They do taste pumpkin spicy, though. Like, imagine a Rice Krispie treat dunked in a pumpkin pie. Or don’t. Because that would be weird. In fact, just make these. It’s easier than trying to imagine something weird. It takes like 10 minutes, so if you hate it, you didn’t waste that much time on it. Now that’s a ringing endorsement if I’ve ever heard one.

I’m really hesitant to pumpkin spice-ify something I like by itself…but maybe, if I have the ingredients on hand, I’ll try.
I tried to make chocolate krispies once, only it looked like soya sauce and no one ate it. Go, orange!
Even if it looked like soy sauce, if it tasted like chocolate and you left them near me, they’d probably be gone within hours.
I made chocolate Cheerios bars for a school function, and no one ate them. They looked so cute in the recipe picture, but in reality looked like rectangular poo bars. Adding M&Ms only made it worse.
Wish I’d known about these before I made my last batch of rice krispie treats…I just dumped in a bottle of Halloween sprinkles.
I don’t know what makes me happier, the ideas you have here or your funny writing style! 🙂 Seriously, I’m going to make these this weekend and crack up thinking your entertaining commentary. Thanks!
now I know what I’m going to do with those Cinnabon flavored marshmallows!!
Say what? Cinnabon flavored???
where did you get those? i MUST know!
Fall pumpkin crazes always make me a bit sad — I actually like pumpkins, but am allergic and can’t eat them. Bah. Once in a while, I decide that by now I MUST be over this allergy by NOW and try something mildly pumpkinny, and two days later when I am able to emerge from the bathroom again, I realize that nope, still allergic, and still REALLY DUMB.
I sense a kindred spirit, here. I adore carving pumpkins, but every time I pulled my arms out of the pumpkin after gutting it, I’d be up to my elbows (literally) in hives. I’m so dumb- it took me YEARS to realize I’m allergic to pumpkin guts. But that doesn’t stop me- I still insist on checking to see if I’m still allergic every year (as if allergies go away).
Luckily, I can handle the stuff just fine — it’s only when it gets in my system that I have to get it back out ASAP, rules of physics be damned. However, mardi gras beads (yeah, I don’t know either) make me break out HEAD TO TOE in hives. It’s SUPER FUN! I actually went to class one year in gloves and a medical mask on Mardi Gras, and I STILL got hives. Oh well, it’s not my worst allergy. My worst one is aspartame & all other artificial sweeteners. Thankfully, I’m not diabetic.
You could but the Grinch to shame with your physical rejection of multiple holidays. If only you were allergic to pine needles, easter egg dye, and candy hearts.
(Not really – allergies suck, and I hope you don’t have any pumpkin mishaps this season!)
Hee, there have been years when my gran sent us sugar-free (read: aspartame-full) chocolates to put on the tree (Hungarian tradition) and we didn’t notice until we ate it and got sick, so there goes some Christmases!
My sister went ahead and carved a pumpkin, and idk why, but this year the smell made me *so nauseous*. Ugh. Maybe it’s all those attempts at NOT being allergic finally biting me in the behind. (I’ll send her over to carve your pumpkin too, so you don’t break out in hives :D)
actually, not to encourage your hives and/or a potentially more dangerous reaction, allergies can appear and disappear for no apparent reason. i was allergic to cats until i was 20. now, they aren’t a problem. i could eat all the strawberries i ever wanted until i was 32. now, they are a problem. not so serious i still won’t occasionally endure swollen, itchy lips….but still.
I made gingerbread rice krispie treats last year with those flavored marshmallows…. yeah my husband and kids went to town on them so quickly I didn’t get to taste it. These sound much more delicious to me, AND if my kids eat them all I can feel slightly better because there is something semi nutricious in there!!!
Halloween is not a huge thing in Australia so pumpkin in a can, yeah never going to happen. But they do look tasty, I love the colour orange, so I have no problem with that.
A quick google search shows that there is, indeed, pumpkin puree in Australia! http://shop.davidjones.com.au/djs/en/davidjones/libbys-100%25-pure-pumpkin-mix-822g You can order it online and at $9.95 it is quite a bit more pricy than in the US but it’s SO good in SO many things it’s totally worth it =)
oh wow who would have though. But DJ is a rip off and too ‘uppity’ for me. Also the closest store is like a 3 hour drive away, and I could never justify paying $10 for 1 can when I can get a pumpkin for $2 at the farmers market.
Thanksgiving dessert! (‘Cause I’m in Canada and Thanksgiving is this weekend, and I forgot so I have nothing ready for it.) So much easier than pie.
I was really just thinking that myself…. o.o
You forgot about thanksgiving?
I just didn’t realize it was this weekend. Knew it was coming up but it seemed like I had more time! September was kind of a blur this year. :p
Here’s a super easy recipe if you want to use up the rest of your pumpkin:
http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2007/10/pumpkin-bread-pudding/
It’s delicious with ice cream!
Melt a little cream cheese frosting down and drizzle it on those orange bitches! That’d be a joygasm in the mouth!
Dark chocolate chunks might be nom nom nom with this. But I think I’d half the recipe because every time I make Rice Krispy treats, everyone’s all excited the first day, but after that, just a pan of stale kripsy treats.
I’ma gonna try the microwave method with this. Pintestes go rogue yo. But not the wax paper smoosh method. That’s the only one that works.
I actually feel kind of bad about how shocked I was that you A) had all of those spices on hand and B) they were all in matching containers.
And I think I just found the recipe for my kid’s kindergarten Halloween Fall Harvest Bake Sale shit I am supposed to lovingly contribute to! Sweet.
I think I want to make a no cook pie with these gooey goodness as the crust. This years pumpkin cooking contest will BE MINE!!!
What? You didn’t do penis shaped rice krispie treats? Pumpkin orange penis. I would pay to see that shit.
good point. get out the cookie cutters. if you spray them w/Pam, they’ll work perfectly!
Hi Sonja!!
I LOVED this test of my pin! {I’m Gabby from Essentially Eclectic} 🙂 I’m so glad it didn’t fail you–I was reading the post biting my lip thinking oh gosh I hope this works for other people too!! To be honest, mine turned out pretty marshmallowy/gooey–I like them like that, but not everyone does. And I agree–disturbingly orange lol. What’s funny is growing up, my mom and I would make rice krispie treats around Halloween and use food coloring to dye them green and orange and funky colors, so it never even occurred to me that orange treats were out of the ordinary lol. Also, I used McCormick brand pumpkin pie spice {in case anyone was wondering} but the way you did it is absolutely works just as well. And yeah, giant can of pumpkin left over 🙁 #pumpkinfail. Anyway, love the idea behind your blog and I started following along! Have a great weekend 🙂
Hugs,
Gabby
Thanks so much for reading, Gabby! I’m always thrilled when the original blogger likes what I’ve done and stops by to comment! Made my day. 🙂
I use Pam like lotion and pat my RKTs down into the pan with my greased up hands. I don’t need any other protection from the sticky stuff!
What is with Americans and pumpkin?! I DON’T UNDERSTAND. Yes, it’s a tasty vegetable. But why are there pumpkin flavoured drinks and pudding and toothpaste?
PS. I would totally call these ‘fake-tan treats’.
It’s just a fall thing since they’re in season. It’s not the actual taste of pumpkin either, it’s the spices. Most pumpkin spice stuff (like lattes) don’t have any pumpkin in them at all, but we love them anyway. Pumpkin spice and apple everything in the fall! Yum!
I’ve always been afraid to try a pumpkin spiced latte. I love my morning coffee, I don’t want to drink pumpkins for breakfast! But now I can rest easy knowing there actually isn’t any pumpkin in there….
🙂 They’re definitely my favorite, I wish places carried them all year. Think of it like Chai for your coffee.
It’s the marketing. They withhold pumpkin from us all year (okay…you can get it canned in the grocery store). Then suddenly, come fall they release it on us in a blaze of pumpkin glory. Coffees and pancakes and baked goods and beer (oh the beer)!!! I personally cook pumpkin and freeze it to use in my smoothies and soups all year. So I’m not obsessed come fall. Okay…maybe a little. 😉
Me either, and, being allergic, it makes every fall a fun ‘read everything to make sure they didn’t hide pumpkin in it’ treat!
I didn’t like this when i tried it a few weeks ago, they didn’t turn out crispy at all. 🙁
[…] on how much pumpkin puree I would need. I bought three cans of it. So far, even with completing the pumpkin spice krispie treats and pumpkintini, I have used a tiny fraction of a can. I was hoping to use up a bit more in this, […]
Oh…oh my…I think I need to make these…
It takes like 10 minutes, so if you hate it, you didn’t waste that much time on it. Now that’s a ringing endorsement if I’ve ever heard one. – a literal lol. thank you.
totally going to make this!
Well, I can’t eat these, being diabetic and all, but have someone I can and intend to make them for. I’m not a whiz in the kitchen but think I can handle these, at least as well as you did! Your blog always make me laugh. Thanks for sharing what you share.
omg i laughed so hard! I love your blog.
