I Cut My Hair (and I Liked It)

12 Posted by - November 3, 2014 - Hair & Beauty

I’ve been growing out my hair for a looooong time, mostly so I can do stuff like this:

long mermaid curls

But also so I can do the impossible hair pin tests…

The other day, though, things got a little out of hand.

I’m doing NaNoWriMo this month (she says, on day 3, when she is already behind), and not only is NaNoWriMo the month-long writing sprint, for me it is also the month of much much muuuuuuch procrastination. See, I like having written, but the act of writing itself is sort of boring. Sitting, typing, pausing to figure out whose left hand is where now? (Did I mention I usually write romances?) So, I procrastinate. I do all my chores. I organize things. I play games on my phone. I paint my nails.

And, apparently, when all that is done, I decide it would be a good idea if I gave myself a haircut.

In fairness, I did actually need a haircut. I haven’t had one since January. Yeah. And, also, I did attempt to make an appointment with my hairdresser (“my hairdresser” makes it sound like I go regularly– ha), but she was busy all the times I’m not working, so I got all anxious and hung up before I could find a mutually convenient time. So I’m blaming my procrastinating habits, but also anxiety and necessity. A triple-threat, if you will.

Besides, Pinterest made it look tewtally easy.

There was even a video tutorial!

So, armed with my new knowledge of how to cut long layers and a deep need to kill 5 minutes (or 10 if you count the time I spent blow-drying it afterwards), I got out my scissors and hacked.

I briefly regretted my decision once the blow-drying was done and I realized that this method allows no compensation for my deep side-part, but hell, I cut my own hair, and I kind of like it. Suck it, hairdresser who is always busy. Suck it, novel that needs to get written more than my hair needs to be cut.

It came out really nice. It looks like you went to a salon. Also even before you cut it the first picture with long curls looks nice on you too.

It looks good! I’m kinda jealous that you were able to cut it and make it look so even. I tried to do side-swept bangs once and learned that trying to angle a cut on your own head is really flippin’ hard.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who hates having to chit chat with the hairdresser.

Not only does my reply clearly not belong to the comment it replied to, I don’t even know where I meant for it to go. Oh well, comment still stands.. I hate chit chatting.

It looks good! I’ve been cutting my own hair since high school. Granted, it’s nothing complicated and pretty long. I just like a few layers. Easy peasy and then I don’t have to chit chat with a hairdresser!

Long time lurker, first time poster. My hair is nearly waist length and driving me insane. One look at this post and BOOM. I cut my own hair for the first time. It’s subtle, but (I think) pretty. Now to see if the husband notices it!

Love the hair!!! I don’t trust anyone with my bangs ever since the traumatic incident of 2012 where two inches of my forehead was visible and I had one inch of bang. I still have nightmares of that day.

You should open your own salon, only take clients with long hair, and only do this haircut. Lazyass Pintester Ponys: niche business at its finest (you’re not lazy. This I know).

I’ve been cutting my own curly, frizzy hair since I was 14 because boneheaded hairdressers were always wetting my hair down, cutting out large chunks, and looking surprised when it ended up looking like a steppe pyramid had grow out of my skull.

I went back to a stylist at the age of 29 to get a pixie cut (the result was a resounding ‘meh’), and had it re-cut by a lady at a fancy-schmancy hair studio that extremely fashionable counter-culture people kept mentioning. The result was better. Not great, but better. I watched her as she worked and took notice of what seemed to work and what seemed not to.

Now I wear it in a sleek finger-wave in the front (it does the finger-wave on it’s own if it’s cut right) and a duck’s ass in the back where my curls are less prominent (but will also sweep up into the D.A. by itself if cut right). I cut it myself with a small array of mirrors and some impressive arm contortion, and while I’m not always ecstatic with the result it sure beats plopping down $70 for “not great but better”.

Also, razor combs are the BEST THING EVER.

I can relate to everything in the comments. I too: 1)hate the hair dresser chair chit-chat 2)loathe spending money and time to come out with “meh”. 3)can’t stand to fork over at least $40 plus tip for, seriously, 10 minutes of their time. Interestingly enough, a few days ago I got too close to a bonfire and singed the crap out of my long bangs. Nothing to be done but snip-snip, move my part over and OMG, the compliments! WHHAAAT? So, yeah, I think the DIY hair works out OK for me. Its. just. hair. It’ll grow back.

I did this as well, thanks to your video. And guess what. I liked the results too! I’ve gotten compliments on the haircut from several people. I feel $35-$45 richer.

Sadly, if it wasn’t for the fact that I somehow still have this site in my fav bookmarks list I wouldn’t even remember to come here anymore.

Thanks for all the fish, Hope you pick up blogging again. You were great at it.

I have to agree – I haven’t been on this site since early October. I just came here on a whim thinking…hey, I bet there will be some new ones by NOW. Yep. ONE. I understand you have a real job now, Sonja, so I guess that’s how it goes. Sad, but understandable. Maybe someone could take it over.
