Bourbon Cider Cocktail

0 Posted by - October 1, 2012 - Food & Drink, Halloween & Autumn

Happy October! This month, I’ll be featuring all those pumpkin-flavored, apple-having, cute-ghost-tutorial pins for Halloween and fall. It’s going to be a month full of scary pinnable twee. I can feel your excitement.

I thought I’d start with a drink, because that’s pretty much how I start everything.

The recipe is super easy: cider, ginger ale, bourbon. I mean, you know, the actual post calls for fresh cider and extra gingery ginger ale and Kentucky bourbon. We do what we can do.

I have from concentrate cider, Schwepps cheapass ginger ale, and Jack Daniels. So we’ll call it close enough and mix that shit in a glass.

Cons:

  1. It’s not as good as my beloved Tom Collins.
  2. If you put it in a little glass, there’s only room for one shot of Jack.
  3. It reminds me more of breakfast juice than autumn.

Pros:

  1. It’s super easy to make.
  2. I ran out of lemon juice, so there was no Tom Collins to be had anyway.
  3. Even if you don’t do the pretty apple garnish, it’s a cute drink.

So, in the end, if you’re looking for something simple that’s still a nice-enough cocktail, this one could fit your bill.

this actually inspired me for mugs of hot apple cider spiked with rum or bourbon. maybe a cinnamon stick for more flavor/garnish.

charla We make hot apple cider toddys at every winter holiday party we host!  RW Knudsen Cider & Spice, brandy (works with spiced rum too, but brandy is better for this one), and cinnamon sticks in the crock pot (microwave/mug for single serving).  Delicious!

I thought the original pin said it was from tampon press. You should have sent me the damn menses card.

Fortunately I have the benefit of friends who own a cider press.  I may have to give this one a try.  Thanks for the pre-test and your little drink is darling!

Have you heard of Apple Pie Moonshine? It’s so good and it tastes nothing like the absurd amount of alcohol that’s actually in it.

janessadawn I love it! It just tastes like apples! U can’t even taste the alcohol. My friends gave me some, telling me to try their homemade apple juice… I drank 3 glasses, and went to stand up, and fell on my ass. I didn’t even know I was drinking alcohol lol

janessadawn Apple Pie is amazing! It’s definitely a process, but since most recipes I’ve seen make gallons of the stuff, it’s totally worth it.

janessadawn Oh my dog, YES! I don’t drink generally, but when my brother-in-law starts passing around his famous apple pie moonshine, get the hell out of my way!

janessadawn We used it for the shot dance at our wedding in Pittsburgh last summer! My family has a recipe and it’s super delish! And you’re right…you can’t even taste the liquor. I would drink it with breakfast if it were socially acceptable…and even if it wasn’t.

Points for starting off the month with a nice stiff one.  Extra points for starting off with a drink.  I think I’ll sub the bourbon for sake and add some fresh grated ginger…’cause that’s just how I roll (on the floor like a drunk monkey).

This has been my favorite Pin for the past month.  We use honey bourbon and spiced apple cider (the GOOD kind).  Good with or without the ginger ale!

I am going to try this, but use Woodchuck for the cider, fresh ginger instead of ginger ale, and actual bourbon (all bourbon is Kentucky Bourbon).  Sounds fantastic.  I’ve had this on my Pinterest since I first started and I need a fall drink that doesn’t rely on pumpkin so much (not that I mind).

Sorry…but “all bourbon is Kentucky bourbon” isn’t exactly true. Whiskey can ONLY be called BOURBON if it was distilled in Kentucky. 🙂

How did it taste? I have no tolerance for the taste of any kind of alcohol and would probably be put off by the smell…but my husband…he likes jack…so much so that he made a jack daniels chocolate bacon ice cream in chef school  and loved it…it was gnarly nasty in my opinion…(make it a virgin and we have a deal tho!!)

If you decided to spend 3 more dollars on the apple cider to get the unfiltered good stuff, throw that shit in a pot and let it boil down for three hours on a back burner, you will have A. a great smelling house and B. apple cider syrup. Now make that drink and you will find it infinitely better.
