On the quest for paleo desserts, if you’re not into chocolate ice cream, you might want to try fried honey bananas. I wanted to try them, in fact, because they looked hella delicious.
I like bananas. I like honey. And I definitely like fried. Also this is easy and I had all the ingredients on hand.
Supposedly, it’s also, you know, good for you. Now I’m not sure a banana, honey, and cinnamon is going to really help your health all that much… but there are many worse things you could eat, so there’s that.
Oh, um, also you’re supposed to use coconut oil cooking spray for this, but what are the odds of me having something like that? Slim to none is the correct answer. Slim to none. So I used sunflower oil. That sounded like it would work.
So I threw em in there…
And it turns out that sunflower oil does indeed work.
And here’s the money shot I’m sure you’ve all been waiting for, when you add the watered-down honey.
But how did it taste?
Well hey, for a dessert with no sugar (you know besides the sugar in honey and bananas), it ain’t bad. The texture took a little getting used to– think warm, chewy snot– but I did eat the whole banana, so it must not have been that bad, right?
Dip the bananas in egg//panko then fry them. If at first it’s not that good, take the healthy factor down a notch. That usually works. OR – I just made french toast yesterday by adding sourdough starter to the egg/cinnamon/sugar dip. It was phenomenal.
I am more surprised at the fact that you have sunflower oil lol. I didn’t even know it exists and I am an avid cook AND I work in a grocery store haha.

Bananas Foster minus the alcohol. But I’d recommend using the alcohol. Lots of it. And some of it even in the actual dessert.
Cooked bananas are gross. (Unless its banana bread then I’m all in)
I love the toffee banana we get here in Chinese restaurants. It’s not a fritter, which I hate, but liquid banana with a crisp toffee shell with sesame seeds. And even though I love toffee bananas, you would have to force-feed me actual bananas, and even then projectile vomiting might result.
Trader Joe’s has spray coconut oil! Actually that’s the only place I’ve found it. But I also haven’t looked very hard.
Put that on some vanilla ice cream. NOW.
Butter. These need to be fried in butter. Butter is paleo! I checked!
Nuh-uh. Butter comes from cows milk and counts as a dairy. Cavemen didn’t milk cows they just killed them. Apparently they knew how to get the oil out of coconuts though so you can use coconut oil instead of butter for your saturated fat needs. Or you could render beef tallow and use that, which plays into the fat from cow idea.
Ghee (uber-clarified butter) is an acceptable fat in all but the strictest of Paleo communities. PLUS you can leave the container out on the counter and it doesn’t go bad. So double win.
Yum! Now do that with plantains instead of bananas. Far less slimy, far more satisfying. Just make sure they’re really dark brown. If they’re green, use salt instead of honey and cinnamon and squash ’em really flat, and they’re like big, thick, homemade potato chips.
Agreed with the plantains. I try to cook mainly Paleo and one of our favorite treats is sweet plantains fried in coconut oil. No honey necessary (just make sure to get overripe plantains)

Yours came out way better than mine. My banana was too ripe, I slicked it too thin, and I got a goop. I ended up pouring the whole mixture over vanilla ice cream for Nathan, and he loved it. So it was a success, but not at all in the form I was expecting.

I love fried bananas. I wanted them the minute I saw your post. I don’t have honey though. so I substituted honey for molasses. they still were good
On one of my low days while on Paleo I threw together melted honey, toasted pecans and cinnamon and called it a bastard baklava. Pretty damn good.
I’ve been dying to make this. I mean, it looked good and had ingredients that you can’t go wrong with. But I have this thing with texture, which is pretty simple: If it has the texture of anything found within my sinus cavities, it’s not going in my mouth. Guess I will pass on this recipe.
