I don’t get how this manicure is supposed to work right when one quick drying method is to put nails in cold water.

Haha, that’s totally how read your blog out loud. “Wow, OMG No one said there would be strings” lol

All lubed up and ready for anything….haha! I think you put too much nail polish in the water. Just sayin’

Hahaha!!! I had the same result. So bad!!! I think maybe you need new nail polish or magical water or something.

I’ve actually done this, and it works…but I only do one nail on each hand because I am super trendy (super lazy) and there’s a lot of cursing, “carnage,” the occasional spill, ruined pants, yada yada. You’re supposed to use room temperature water, and I get better results when I do this over white nail polish, since most polishes are sheer on the first coat, it just shows up better. Also, dip your nail in, hold still while you use a toothpick to remove the rest of the floating polish, then pull out (heh heh heh.) No strings! Instead of Vaseline, I wipe my finger with baby oil (seriously, who decided on that name…olive oil from olives, yes..peanut oil from peanuts, yes…baby oil from…?) and afterwards, use a q-tip dipped in acetone to clean up. Yes it is a ridiculous waste of time.

Instead of plain water, you should have tried one of those fancy diet cleanse waters that are all over Pinterest. They all look pretty gross, so that would’ve been fun! Also, can I formally request that you do a part deux version of this manicure? After the diet & with booze. I play pool better drunk, maybe you cocknail better drunk too.

A flask, lube, and some scary looking alien jizz stuck to you when you pulled out. Worth the wait.

I did the same damn thing!

I think my favorite part is the creepy laugh. I contemplated doing my nails like this before, then I looked at my fingers and remembered I have no pretty nails.

At least your make-up looked nice!

Oh you made me cringe the entire time! I don’t know what video used as a
    reference. I’ve done this one
(http://pinterest.com/pin/260153315946242544) and I actually had it
work. I did it on all my nails. While it is still a bit messy of a job,
it actually works. I actually used chapstick to prevent anything
sticking to my fingers or skin. Way easier to maneuver. Although I do
laugh at your fail, this technique is not a fail. It works.

Oh dear, that looked like strings of Smurf snot. But on the upside, the finished result wasn’t too bad. And well done for drinking water. I tried that shit once, it’s better with scotch in it.

The pink in your hair looks really good braided in with the brown.

Your make up looks amazing!! As does your hair! Your nails however…lol

  • tinydancer May 8, 2013 - 10:33 pm Reply

I do this a lot, and I usually tape around the sides of my nails. I also do everything like monkeybelle says, and mine turn out great. Another thing is that you have to drip the polish really quickly or the previous color will dry and not let the next one spread and makes the swirls look like crap.

I am drunk off this cocktail all day, everyday!! So glad to see it make an appearance ๐Ÿ˜‰

I love the giant tub of vaseline. Should we start an over/under wager on how long it takes to use it up? Imma set it at… 5 years. Quickness of use will depend on your, uh, hobbies, of course.

I just tried water marbling last week. I had decent results. One of the tutorials I watched used a toothpick and while the fingers were still submerged she got all the gunk out of the water before she removed her fingers – cuts way down on the stringy stuff. I only had it on one nail when I did mine (http://justjennifer.net/painting-my-nails-psychedelic-water-marble/).

I have to admit that watching you do your manicure (even if the cocktail was just water) was much more interesting that it was doing my own…. So thanks for the video ๐Ÿ™‚ You’re awesome – and doing a three day diet for your blog – and sticking with it – kudos! I would have given that shit up as soon as I realized I couldn’t properly do cocknails ๐Ÿ™‚

i’ve done this successfully… you’ve got to work quickly. the nail polish spreads out over the water really quickly and thinly, so you’ve only got a few seconds before it dries. i dip two nails in it, then swirl a toothpick in the water to get out all the not-so-swirly bits of nail polish out and start again. it really helps to watch youtube tutorials on this technique. also, your color scheme was a little weird, so i think that contributed to the overall effect.

  • NLO May 9, 2013 - 7:10 pm Reply

I’ve done this before and here’s the tip: the water has to be room temperature. Cold water will make it gummy and sink.

    • NLO May 9, 2013 - 7:14 pm Reply

And you have to work fast. It hardens in the water very quickly. As I type this, I see monkeybelle down below me already posted most the tips…

Anyway, try it again. It’s fun once you figure out all the nuances.

okay…..first the water needs to be room temp. room temp bottled water works the best. some polishes dont work, some do. if they dont spread out, use the tooth pick to “attach” it to the side of the cup. works best on the nails if you put a base coat. and the vaseline is a mess. dont use it. use masking tape to tape off your fingers. only dip one finger at a time. and after dipping your finger, keep it in the water, use a qtip and clean the excess off the top of the water. it does work with the right polishes.

damnit now i know how to do it properly and that isn’t any fun

  • Jenny hair May 24, 2013 - 8:16 pm Reply

first, you need to dip your finger in, straighten it out, clean the excess nail polish, and then take out your nail. funny video!

I had the SAME results, only worse. (DID THIS WORK FOR ANYONE?)

    • thatpandabitca April 16, 2014 - 5:14 am Reply

It worked for me! I used regular tap water and masking tape and they turned out great. You gotta be patient with it. I will say that the first time I tried it the results were horrendous.

This always works for me and I love doing my nails this way! You HAVE to have bottled water at room temp, and also use a toothpic to remove the extra film off the top BEFORE removing the nail! Works awesome ๐Ÿ˜€
